Maroon-bellied Parakeet (Pyrrhura frontalis)

Pyrrhura frontalis occurs in southeastern Brazil (Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul), northeastern Argentina (Misiones), eastern Paraguay, and Uruguay. It inhabits humid montane forests in the north, and woodland and gallery forests in the south; tolerant of humans and occurs in towns, urban parks, and gardens; sea level to 1,600 m. The Maroon-bellied Parakeet is mostly green overall with a rufous frontal band, black lores, whitish or brownish ear coverts, a yellow-green breast, and maroon belly and undertail. Length 25-28 cm; weight 72-94 g. Breeding season lasts from October through December. This species nests in tree cavities and also niches in houses and other man-made structures. Clutch size 3-5; incubation ca. 30 days; the young remain in the nest ca. 45 days. P. frontalis feeds on seeds of Araucaria angustifolia and other species, but also fruits, flowers, and nuts.
